Hi!

I'd like to discuss the term "New Age"! :)

As you probably know, it is generally used as a derogatory term for an inauthentic, vapid, superstitious "spirituality". Pretty straightforward, right?

Or is it?

It seems like the term "New Age" has also come to be one of those handy rhetorical devices, like calling somebody a "Nazi" or talking about "values". Basically, I've seen people use it write off any philosophical or spiritual approach that is either

a ) unorthodox or

b ) employs language or a presentation style deemed inappropriate.

Sometimes I've also noticed it's applied to religious syncretism, or to people whose worldview is built off of a variety of spritual sources! It seems like a fair number of people here incorporate a variety of spiritual traditions and insights; does this make the regulars at thebigview "new agey"? I don't think so, but it seems to me that the criticism could be leveled!

I guess my question is, what really defines "New Age"? Have you ever been accused of being "New Age", or do you in fact consider yourself to be "New Age"?

Well, from what I've seen, the term New Age generally means something of the modern age, i.e. from about the 90s forward, that is spiritual and sensual in nature; for instance, there genre of music New Age includes people like Enya, who is a very spiritual and sensual artist. And, generally, New Age spirituality also includes many older spiritualities, such as Wicca, the Norse myths, and many other "occult"-ish techniques of spirituality, such as astrology. I don't consider myself New Age personally, although I do find it interesting; but, I'd say several people here seem to be, such as, perhaps, psyche. But, this is what I've gathered of the concept. :)
