View Full Version : On Discussion

Why must we discuss things? why is it we do not appreciate cuss and always feel the need to discuss things? Did God create this world with every thing containing a certain amount of cuss, and placed us here to discuss them? And once we see a thing free from cuss, then we see that thing in its true nature? Is a cuss a cloud in the eyes that must be discussed in order to truly see?
What is cuss? Whats the point of discussing? How does one discuss? And how did the cuss get there in the first place? This is what i wonder at this moment. And because I only wonder and do not have a complete understanding, then there must be cuss. Let us discuss this great cuss!

We can discuss because everyone's view of life is different.

Why must we discuss things?
We prefer to discuss,
we prefer to substitute one ideology for another,
and so we escape from action through ideology.

Even though many, if not most, actions are carried out based on an ideology, such as Krishnamurti writing what he did based on his own ideologies.

wasn't "based on his own ideologies" scam
A meditative mind is silent. It is not the silence which thought can conceive of; it is not the silence of a still evening; it is the silence when thought - with all its images, its words and perceptions - has entirely ceased.

Because we're human.
Would it have been better had Buddha, Christ and Mohamed maintained their silence?
Mere Baba did in the latter years of his life.

Mere Baba? Was Mere the guy's first name?

It's a long time since I read about him. Just did a quick check on the net, there is a Mere Baba, also refered to as Sai Baba, a guru, but no mention of silence. Sorry I can't give you a more definitive answer

:D It's cool. I just meant his first name is funny.

We discuss because we cannot see ourselves apart from our thoughts. Because of this, we like to 'refine' our thoughts by taking different perspectives that we get from discussions. Intellectualy, it can be shown to be a futile process to arrive at the Truth. The challemge is to be the alternative.

Philosophy/discussion is mental sport with the goal-posts removed.

Unless I'm mistaken, Alpha, you're refering to Meher Baba (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meher_Baba), a holy man and the founder of Sufism Reoriented, a non-Islamic approach to Sufism. He observed a vow of silence from 1925 until 1969!
Although, this "silence" did not stop him from communicating!
Communication, I think, is the important thing! One doesn't need verbal speech or even written words to communicate, although these are usually helpful! Of course, when communicating about spiritual matters, discussion can sometimes be a hindrance. But discussion tends to be the starting point for most people.
If there's a more effective form of communication, use it; if not, stick to your words!

I agree, discussion can only take us so far! But if it's a vehicle for eventually "arriving" at the Truth directly, for highlighting that alternative, then it's certainly worth engaging in.

in response to Zoid, who wrote:

 Oh, c'mon now, scameter, you don't have to be paid millions to play a sport! Lots of people play for the same reason you do philosophy---they love it.
Come to think of it, many people complain about professional philosophers (and with good reason!)...I wonder if maybe their complaints don't parrellel similiar complaints people have about professional atheletes?
Either way, great analogy there, Zoid! :)

Even though millions of people watch many different sports around the world every year; most people consider *everyone* philosophical to be boring and useless. At least atheletes get the chance to live their dreams with approval and luxury; philosophers get to have it as a "hobby".

If Meher Baba were having a heart attack, he sure 'nuff wouldn't be tapping out "Call 911!" on his alphabet board.
Reality is thoughtless, yes, but if reality calls out "who wants a glass of wine?", reality is calling back "ME!"

Hello Bito
If Meher Baba were having a heart attack, he sure 'nuff wouldn't be tapping out "Call 911!" on his alphabet board.
Reality is thoughtless, yes, but if reality calls out "who wants a glass of wine?", reality is calling back "ME!"
If Meher Baba were having a heart attack, Meher Baba would not be having a heart attack ~ heart attack would be happening and Meher Baba watching it happen.
Reality is thoughtless, equally thought is reality ~ a reality that is there while not being there. If this unreality were not a reality, then why cannot the 'other reality' do without food and wine?

For meher baba there wouldn't be a meher baba, maybe for sahyo also, but for Bito and Eidelweis there would still be a meher baba about whom they are talking.
