I have a question about the Dhammapada that I hope you can answer.
First of all, I have found two different basic versions. In one, the 26th chapter is called "The Holy Man." In the more rare one I've found, it is called "The True Master", and is completely different. My first question is why these different versions exist, and why "The True Master" is so much harder to find.
My second question is if anyone knows where I can find a translation of "The True Master" into its original Pali. I've searched libraries and what seems like the whole internet, and the only Pali translations for the Dhammapada don't contain "The True Master" as a chapter. Can anyone either help me out with this or point me in the right direction? Thanks so much!

You didn't identify either of the translations.

In any case, translations differ because words carry multiple meanings and nuances, and each translator applies their understanding to the original (or the version the translator is using).

An excellent source is Access to Insight (http://www.accesstoinsight.org/index.html). They have translations of much of the Tipitaka, including two versions of the Dhammapada. See http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/kn.../dhp/index.html (http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/kn/dhp/index.html).

One of my more favorite parts of the Dhammapada:

I got the new translation by Gil Fronsdal (my avatar is the picture on the cover), and it is truly awesome. In this translation, Chapter 26 is called "The Brahmin"

I have another translation that is seemingly more poetic, but it says completely different things than the Gil Fronsdal says, and what the version on this website says.

The translation I recently picked up and am now working my way through, back and forth between the translations and notes, and it is by Glenn Wallis. I have absolutely no idea what this translation has in comparison to others, but I am enjoying it :)

Chapter 26 in this translation is 'The Superior Person'
