As a general rule, threads that do not conform to the forum rules may be closed and individual postings that do not conform to the forum rules may be deleted. Although this is rarely necessary and rarely applied, it does happen every now and then.

In order to avoid having to explain each individual instance of such editorial intervention, I thought it may be a good idea to explain the general criteria.

(1) Messages are eligible for deletion or editing by the moderator...
...if they contain unsolicited advertising (spam).
...if they contain copyrighted material.
...if they contain unabridged quotes of copyrighted articles.
...if they contain quotes otherwise beyond the scope of "fair use".
...if they contain pornographic material or links.
...if they contain abusive, defamatory, or insulting language.
...if they are designed to infamise or denigrate other members.
...if they glorify violence, greed, or hatred.
...if they approve of terrorism or religious/ideological extremism.
...if they violate laws, trade marks, trade secrets, etc.

(2) Threads are eligible for closing by the moderator...
...if they contain repeated ad hominem, especially targeted at other members.
...if they are designed to disparage or threaten members.
...if they are designed to solicit members for an organisation or group not endorsed by TBV.
...if they disparage religions or certain groups (such as nations, professions, etc.).
...if they degrade into flame wars.
...if they disrupt the TBV community otherwise.

There is obviously quite a bit of room for interpretation with these criteria. As of now, decisions are simply left to the discretion of the admin or the moderator. It is generally neither desirable nor possible to discuss moderation decisions and therefore such discussions are likewise eligible for deletion/closing unless there is a great number of members interested in them.

Cheers, Thomas
