Interesting that the "Zero Dimension" and the 10th Dimension are both Euclidean points...I wonder if they are not, in fact, the same Dimension? Does reality "loop" together, forming some kind of multi-dimensional circle?

It started out really interesting. I like the use of flash and some well thought out (at least early on) cartooning to help visualize things that are hard to visualize. Unfortunately, the video turned to utter crap later on. Anthropomorphized, twisted explanations, trying to put familiar terms to things that don't make sense like that. You'll find much better explanations of higher dimensions in theoretical mathematics, and things'll actually be true rather than just fun pseudoscientific mythologizing and hand-waving.

What makes you say that the explanation given on that site was not true/ pseudoscientific/ mythologizing/ just fun? I was under the impression that something serious was sought to be explained in a way that any lay man could understand.

Even if they all made sense (it's stretching things a lot), it doesn't address if any of these things are the case. Also, as it seems to be motivated by (or claimed to be supported by, insofar as ending up at the same(?) number of dimensions) string theory, I should note that in physics string theory is on the way out, and while there may be other spatial dimensions than those we are familiar with, they are not just collections of possible timelines or the other ways this movie tries to present them. There's so much metaphysical assumption built into the story they weave here (and it's a compelling story on first watch, I'll admit) -- for example all that they speak of choice and possibility and such. But when scientists speak of other dimensions, they are not speaking of just collecting together all the possible orientations in one dimension. I think that's one of the main places where this movie got off track.

I dunno, I was probably being too harsh. Sorry if I came off flippant; I write in a hurry sometimes and don't express myself well. I don't know the context of this model and what the author is claiming to use it for. Maybe it's meant to be a little out-there just to work as a metaphor, to help visualize even though it's not true. Like I said, it's certainly got some really creative visual tricks for helping the brain 'click' and perform those sort of meta-Necker-flips needed to grok things we can't directly visualize.

For those interested in higher dimensions and how to explain/visualize/understand them, I'd recommend Ian Stewart's book "Flatterland". He's a mathematician, and it's very readable.

Long back, I was reading about the multiple dimensions. It seems that according to mathematics, infinite dimensions are existing simultaneously. We are limited in our capacity to imagine the 4th or more dimensions than 3 because all of our senses only perceive in the three dimensions that our body occupies.

That article described the fourth dimension as the direction in which a cube would move if, at no time in its movement, no part of it would occupy a position (in 'space') that any part of it had occupied before.

This is following from a point moving in a similar way to become a line, the line to become a square and the square to become a cube, following the same rule - that when they move, no part/ point of it would occupy a position which any part of it had occupied before.

The fifth dimension would be obtained by the 4 dimensional cube+ following the same algorithm and this can be done upto infinite dimensions.

This seemed to be a plausible algorithm to me.

This made me think of a novel I recently read: Edward A Abbot's Flatland - A novel of many dimensions.
I wonder why they act so natural about these "new" dimensions. Without a real reason, the creators of 'Imagining the tenth dimension' just assume there are ten dimensions. They do explain a bit what they imagine they would look like, but not how they got by this idea.

Right. It is not hard to explain mathematically how other spatial dimensions would work (though it is hard to visualize directly, which is why we use analogies like raisen bread expanding in an oven to help visualize how 3D space could itself expand in the expanding cosmological model). The problem is when claiming that that is how things work here in our world. We aren't even sure our own spatially-3D space is Euclidean.

*If* there were a fourth spatial dimension, we have no reason to think it folds in any interesting ways or does anything else that would affect us (especially teleporting from one 3D point to another by folding the 3D space -- we have no reason to think our 3D space is actually oriented in such a way in some 4D space).


As for the idea of a dimension being just a collection of all possibilities, note that they collect together all possible timelines, but why not collect together all possible spatial orientations? And for that matter, why is such a collection a dimension (it's not a *spatial* dimension, so their model gets off track and certainly doesn't align with string theory's type of dimensions)? And maybe the idea of possibilities (or the construction of a set that is made up of all possibilities) is in fact ill-formed and doesn't even make logical sense.

There's lots of things about the video that rubbed me the wrong way, despite thinking it's a neat attempt at visualizing. It makes a good story, could work for the background of a soft-scifi novel, but it's not very scientific [yet?].

Again, just my two cents.
