View Full Version : The Buddha Boy

I saw a documentary on this the other day. It was of a 15 year old boy who has been supposedly sat perfectly still meditating under a tree for over 10 months. The film crew, obviously sceptical, filmed him continuously when they reached him. For 100 hours that the film crew were aloud to film for, he did not move a muscle. He sat there perfectly still, without food nor water, meditating.

He was born and lives in the same place that the Buddha was, Nepal. And also both their mothers share the same name. Many call him the Buddha reincarnate. He has many followers who stay by him and watch him day and night in awe. His elder brother makes sure he is safe at all times when meditating; he created a fence surrounding him so that no one could get too close to distract him.

Bewildered by this, scientists could not understand how he is able to withstand without food and water. The average human body cannot normally survive without water for 3-4 days, yet he proved he could do it for a lot more. Scientists came across another man in the same region who was like the 'Buddha Boy', in that he could also withstand days on end without food and water. He was not busy nor meditating and allowed for scientists to test on him. They put him in a room and filmed him continously for 10 days. This man was very old, 82. He claimed he has not eaten nor drank since the age of 12. For these 10 days he was filmed, he did indeed withstand from food and water and his body remained perfectly intact. For a man of 82, he is extremely healthy and well able. Some say he was able to draw energy from the sun in order to stay alive.

The Buddha Boy started his meditation in May 2005 and said he set out to stay meditating under that tree without movement for 6 years, just as the Buddha did, in order to reach enlightenment or Buddhahood. However, at the end of the documentary it mentioned that a few months ago this year, the boy went missing. Some say he has travelled further into the forrest to continue his meditation (you could imagine the media frenzy that emerged where he was originally), and some people also have the theory that he has been kidnapped. Nobody knows.

I was amazed to read your post, and searched out more information to see if there was something to it. It seems to be a truly inspiring yet also sad story in a way. Inspiring for the obvious reasons. Especially as he has asked not to be called a Buddha as he has only obtained the first level of enlightenment and would like to be referred to as a Rinpoche. Sad for the fact that his pursuit of enlightenment has opened a bizarre / freak show atmosphere around him. More troubling is the intrusion of doctors who want to study and test him... but have yet figured out a way to do it. I don't blame him for moving off to another location, its hard enough to become enlightened let alone doing it with gawkers, hawkers and nay-sayers. That said I truly hope that it is true about him, the world could use the wisdom of another Buddha right about now.

On another note, I do hope this is the Buddha Reincarnate. In our lifetimes we may yet see a new coming of the Buddha (The Buddha Boy, currently 16), a second coming of Jesus Christ (some believe he was born in 1999), the devil reincarnate (said to be born on the day 06/06/06, last month) and also armaggedon (believed to be in 2012!). Unfortunately, this is the only part of the story which has any truth in it:

"These lamas [monks] are going to build mansions out of this. If I wasn't a bit embarrassed I'd take a van down there and set up a stall."

By the way, this sort of story crops up about once a month in this part of the world. last month it was a "sacred cow" in Cambodia. Of course, the pilgrims had to part with some cash to get to drink some sacred cow urine. There were lots of takers, as there always are in an undeveloped, unsophisticated society. I am surprised to see this getting any play HERE! Don't believe all the crap, and all the links, on the Internerd :nono:

I didn't find this from the internet or any links. I saw it on a documentary on TV, I think on 'Discovery Science'. The crew were obviously very sceptical about it all too, but they filmed him straight for 100 hours and they showed this ultra fast forwarded in the programme; and he did indeed not even move a muscle in all that time, when scientists say he should have died or at least weakened dramatically. He remained perfectly healthy, as much so as when they first arrived.

The same with the old man; as mentioned, he was also filmed continously and this footage was shown on the programme. He did nothing but meditate for 10 straight days.

How can I not believe it when I saw it filmed on television with my own eyes? I don't think they tend to fool people with illusions on Discovery Science.

I'm not saying that he is indeed the Buddha reincarnate, or that he isn't. These are just views shared by other people. What is amazing however is how he has proved to defy what science says. Scientists from around the area who went to watch him said "Because of him we now have to re-write all of science!".

I'm glad you said "scientists from around the area".
Those who are familiar with this sort of situation, know that anyone, "scientist" or otherwise, who tries to debunk this story on site, runs the very real risk of being lynched on the spot!
This is a scam, probably started by the mother (who, incidently changed her name), and it is now being run by a "commitee", simply because of the large amount of cash to be had. The problem I see, is the people who are coming up with this cash are those who can least afford to pay; poor farmers and manual laborers who just want something to believe in.
As for the boy, he is just doing what a good son would, that is to starve himself to the point of death for his mother. He is definitely not in good health, having been reviced several times ( behind a blanket). No "real" Doctor has been allowed to get within less than a few meters of him.
Just how far his mother and the commitee will carry this, remains to be seen.
I don't see how this does anything good for the image of Buddhism either.

That is a possibility. They actually said on the program that a boy could be simply being starved to death here merely for profits. I'm not saying thats not possible. I'm not sure whether I believe that though. Either way, if it is a hoax, it has been carried out very well.
