I speak 5. Portuguese (the native one), English, French, Spanish and Italian.
Portuguese and English are my best ones because I speak them all the time. The others I will hopefully make them fluent forever by spending some time in countries that speak those languages.

How many languages do you speak? ;) :chatty: :dancing:

B) :D I'm really just not very good at learning other languages. I would like to, especially Latin and Old English, but I simply can't. Course, I've never tried learning Latin. Perhaps it would be different; it does seem, to me, to be somewhat like English, being more logical and less frilly than French.

^did you use an online translator for that? cause you don't need the "faire"

parlez-vous combien de langues?

(or parle-tu)

TruthSeeker
10th April 2006, 05:29 AM
Yes, the "faire" is a bit out of place...

That last version was better. But it sounds kinda odd with teh "combien" in the middle. Generally, you start the sentence with the "combien"... <_<

Smurf
10th April 2006, 06:32 AM
you do French?

it is:

"you speak how many languages?"

verb comes before the object

TruthSeeker
10th April 2006, 06:41 AM
Yes, normally, but there are exceptions. Which you get to know well when you get more advanced... ;)

French has plenty of exceptions to keep you working hard....

I think it is an incredibly annoying, frilly language of unneeded "silent" letters and meaningless logistical settings required. Unfortunately, English has had to suffer it. Old English was simple and beautiful, even though most people would of course disagree, France being thought of as the "culture center" of Europe, even though they forgot how much culture northern Europe had. Viking society had the only true democracy ever, but in light of Greece's near-democracy republic and France's glorious "culture", it has been conveniently forgotten. Heaven forbid the northern Europeans would get any recognition beyond their wealth, and even that is seen in hate, or better called, jealousy.

you and your opposition to the French language, seriously I think it has been around before Anglo-Saxon languages, oh and they even liked it enough to assimilate into modern english

TruthSeeker

Modern English is extremely easy, because it was simplified for widespread use. The only factor that makes it hard to learn is all the different pronounciations. Those were caused by the way English was conceived. The English language was conceived in England by few different tribes, including Vikings. The Vikings themselves contributed a lot to the English language (though they were the enemy). So isolated villages pronounced and spelled English in different ways. So when the printing press came to speed up and spread the communications, they were struck with a dilemna. They needed to choose the letters to spell the words, but they had all those options. So what did they do? They mix all the different pronounciations and spellings completely randomly.

Yes.... Good job!

I have been learning French for three years and German for two; despite this, my German is better than my French. I will continue German at school, but I have had to drop French; I will probably continue with both throughout my life.
I have always been interested in linguistics and philology, and would like to study the history of the various language groups that have contributed to Western civilization: primarily the Germanic, the Slavic and the Aramaic languages. Chinese also has a certain allure for me, along with the rest of the compellingly beautiful Eastern culture; depths that I have yet to plumb. Well, I have a whole lifetime... :)

And Scameter: don't you study a language at school?

Smurf
11th April 2006, 06:36 AM
yeah German's cool

Truthseeker: you're saying that Modern English was concieved by the tribes and vikings alone?

TruthSeeker
11th April 2006, 06:39 AM
Something like that. I don't remember all the ones involved, exactly. There might have been some french influence as well.

I studied this more thn a year ago. So it's a bit hard to remember all the details...

I'm not doing it to be cute. And actually, it hasn't; French evolved from Latin and Greek. Anglo-Saxon derived from the ancient Angle and Saxon tribes of northern Germany and Denmark, and existed before the advent of modern-like French. And the English didn't like French's assimilation into their language; the Normans forced it on them.

Those were caused by the way English was conceived.

But more especially, alot more especially, because of the French influence on it.

:) Same here.

And Scameter: don't you study a language at school?

Not currently no. I was being forced to learn Spanish for two grades in middle school, but now I'm not learning any. I will probably start learning one next year though, and hopefully it'll be German.

Greek had no more influence on French than it did on other languages, but yes, French is derived largely from Latin - however, the Franks were a Germanic tribe; I think that France was part of the cultural Germanic 'bloc' in Europe after the collapse of the Roman Empire.

I don't think that you are being fair on French: you say that modern French is younger than Anglo-Saxon. Well, so is English.
All of these languages - the Germanic groups, Latin, Greek - were all part of the same Indo-European family. They split and evolved throughout the centuries, but most of them are still similar to each other, and they have influenced each other over the years.

I see what you mean Kether, and I agree. But, in linguistics there is a distinction between the "Romance languages" and the "Germanic" languages, as well as the Slavic languages. But, the French are just as much human as the northern Europeaners.

It's fine smurf, I'm sorry to sound irritated. :)
