Thomas,

Your forum has, sadly, turned into a comedic joke about funny faces.

You are the philosopher not them.

Childish philosophy is very silly, don't you think so.

When do you inspire reasoning??

I remember when you thought seriously about logic.

Why have you let these children control your philosohical forum??
Are emoticoms the 'big picture'?

I have great respect for your philosophical opinions.
I have no respect for the 'philosophies' of children.

Will you continue to entertain these kids, or will you express some real philosophical thoughts, of your own and others?
(including the opinions of 14 year olds)

There is no philosophy without logic, is there?

Regards,

Owen

"Quick," yells little Ernie as he rushes into the drugstore, "my Dad is hanging upside down by his pants leg in a barbed wire fence!"
"What do you need?" asks the druggist. "Help or first-aid supplies?"
"Nothing like that," says little Ernie breathlessly, "I want another roll of film for my camera!"

Paddy's at the bar and he's drunk so much that the bartender asks him to leave. Paddy insists that he is not drunk, and he will prove it.
“See that cat coming in the door?” he says. “Well that cat has only one eye and that proves I am not drunk.”
“You are drunker than I thought!” says the bartender. “That cat is not coming in, it's going out.”

Hello Owen,

The thing is, there is always change. We've had days of intense philosophical discussion with many experienced and educated contributors like yourself. People who have studied philosophy and communicate at a more academic level. Today there is a younger crowd and the discussions are lighter.

I think that's okay. The younger people who have just discovered their love for wisdom maybe tomorrow's experts. Who knows? The intention behind this forum is to engage people with the big philosophical questions. If that happens in a playful way, why not?

Having said that, I would of course like to see less smilies and more thoughtful postings. And yes, the study of logic is very essential, because philosophy often purports to be about truth and truth is the very subject of logic.

Cheers, Thomas

Thomas:
Hello Owen,

Hello Thomas,

Thomas:
The thing is, there is always change.

Change is not the issue.

It is never the case that a 'smily' is a responce to a philosophical issue.

Thomas:
Today there is a younger crowd and the discussions are lighter.

In the very least, we express thoughts that can be communicated.
(an apparent use of language)

Thomas:
I think that's okay. The younger people who have just discovered their love for wisdom maybe tomorrow's experts. Who knows?

It is clear that the younger people 'will' be tormorrows experts'.

But, it is not okay to express the thoughts communicated by 'emoticoms' as a part of the thoughts communicated by ordinary language. (emoticoms do not constitue a language!)

Thomas:
The intention behind this forum is to engage people with the big philosophical questions. If that happens in a playful way, why not?

What 'big view' is expressed by any emoticom?

I can see that there is an audience for this means of expression, but, What does that have to do with the concept of "The Big View".

Perhaps they belong to a 'bugs bunny' forum' !?!?

Asheera,
To pretend that a language (such as yours) has syntactic or semantic expression, is incorrect.

What philosophy can 'possibly' come from the 'language' of smilies'?

Does 'the big' view' include any childish language (emoticoms) ..or do you want to communicate with others?

Thomas:
Having said that, I would of course like to see less smilies and more thoughtful postings. And yes, the study of logic is very essential, because philosophy often purports to be about truth and truth is the very subject of logic.

Of course.

Do we want 'mickey mouse' and 'Wittgenstien' in the same forum?

There's lots of room for comedy, but, not for a board that boasts a 'big view' of the universe (reality).

how boring the world would be if everyone was like you owen. just because you don't appriciate someone elses expressions and views doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to express them. why does it bother you so much that some of us use the smilies or talk about off the wall subjects?

I suggest different forums: one for those with philosophical concerns and another for those who only want to express humour or incoherence.

Your "big view" has no sense if it only concerns itself with 'tea and crumpets'.

It is difficult to relate smilies and incompresensible grammar (eg. asheera's) to any sense of truth or falsity.

If you do not want to express truth or falsity, then, apparently anything goes. Is that OK with you?

Cheers,

Owen

asheera:
buddha: "There is self and there is truth. Where self is, truth is not. Where truth is, self is not."

It's clear that truth is not self. They are different 'kinds' of entities.

I am the truth (JC) is syntactic nonsense.

It seems to me strange that an omnicient God could not understand language.
So much for superstitious beliefs, of christianity.

Only propositions have truth or falsity.
Don't you think so, asheera?

-------------------------

It does not bother me, that, others use smilies to help in the expression of 'off the wall' topics.

I enjoy these (emotive implications) as much as you.

I think 'location' is important here too.
What 'off the wall topics' would you include in a logic forum?

Thomas Knierim

Owen: I suggest different forums: one for those with philosophical concerns and another for those who only want to express humour or incoherence.

This is one of the reasons I created different forums inside this discussion board. Okay, we don't have a "Humour and Incoherence" forum yet, but we have forums such as "Culture And Lifestyle" and "Politics And Current Events" for those who do not like to discuss philosophy. If I should notice that a topic doesn't belong into the forum where it was started, I usually move it.

Naturally this doesn't prevent people from posting incoherencies and nonsense into the philosophy or any other forum. If that should happen, and if I detect some form of transgression, such as spam, trolling, or deliberate sabotage, I will remove or edit the offending post, but these cases are extremely rare. I cannot and do not want to censor any contributions on the account of being trivial.

Owen: If you do not want to express truth or falsity, then, apparently anything goes. Is that OK with you?

I think that philosophy goes beyond the expression of truths and falsities. In fact, these exist only as consequences of definitions agreed upon.

Cheers, Thomas

oh for chrissakes, Owen! If the smilies don't really bother you & you actually enjoy them as you say, then why are you complaining about them? Or are you just trying to start some stuff?

Smilies do have a practical application on this board- when we talk face to face or on the phone, we use both words & voice inflections to communicate what we mean. With the wriiten word there is no voice inflection. A smilie can take the edge of a comment the might otherwise read as, well, stark. Show that you mean something in the best possible way, as opposed to being mean or unfeeling. As for posting only smilies, have you ever tried it? I did for a few posts awhile back. Communicating your thoughts using only the smilies, believe me, even with Thomas' broad selecton, it's tougher than you think!

(MidSun) the more u know, the more stupid u become, so we are all kids, but not all young ppl

oh gawd! outta the mouths of babes!
This is why I like the kids Owen, they keep you young, they keep you on your toes, & every now & again they toss in a zinger.....

Don't children too have the right to be interested in philosophy? Why should people be prevented from at least voicing their opinions, even if those opinions are incorrect?

Owen:

The true nature of the universe is dictated by the rules at the quantum level of reality.

At the quantum level of reality, randomness rules.

Randomness is the universe's way of consistently producing that which might possibly be advantageous.

Thus, all the posters and posting methods that you object to, which seem bizarre and even "random" are all part of the grand scheme of life.

And the grand scheme of life can only be seen by taking the big view.

Thus, all such posts and posting methods belong here at this web site, titled "thebigview.com".

I agree with you, Psyche.

Philosophy should not come from authority. People's views should not be accepted just because they are supposedly cleverer than others - it is whether the ideas are logical that matters, not that the person who came up with them has four degrees.

It doesn't really matter how old this topic is, Thomas didn't delete it so it's obviously still in effect. Honestly, I was bored and saw a guest reading it and thought that I would check it out, and I did and found myself laughing, and so insisted on commenting. If you don't continue, it's fine, I can simply laugh at the rest of the topic. If you do continue however, I can laugh at the new installments. Either way's fine for me. :)
