We all talk and analyze and offer up opinions, but does any of that really matter without taking action?

I would just like some people to share the works they do to back up their ideals.

The action I take is attempt to engage people in discussion of democracy, increase awareness of the philosophy important to democracy, and especially awareness of the education essential to a healthy democracy. At the same time, I am trying to get people to pay attention to the difference between the New World Order and the democracy we thought we were defending in two world wars. This discussion should clarifying many things. I write letters to the editor of our local paper often, and sometimes write my representatives.

I was the third of 3 people to faste on the steps of our state capital building and this influenced a bill that was on the floor.

I seriously want to create a science exhibit and add to the park that is near our science center, to increase awareness of what science has to do with democracy.
I hope to give a well publicized speech this Fourth of July.

My concern is our economy will collaspe before there is awareness of the New World Order not being what our democracy was all about. If this happens, the memory of what it was like to live in our democracy will be as forgotten as the democracy of Athens.

I have done my best to encourage public discussion of public education in my community, but so far my efforts are falling on deaf ears.

However, after 3 years of effort, I was able to convince the editor of our local paper that we are head for an oil crisis and therefore, an economic crisis and possiblely war, just before war and oil became the big subject in media. However, we are far from discussing the insanity built on having plenty of oil, and resdesigning our community for a reality without this abundance of oil.

Of course before I can do anything, I must read and research. I love researching at the University of Oregon library. Years ago, I microfilmed old newspapers for the library and that is how I found the 1920 warning about oil, economic trouble and war.
In the documents department, I can access government documents, and this is where I got my information about the 1958 National Defense Education Act, and other things Eisenhower said or did. I also discovered when Reagan took office, research on poverty is completely replaced with researched on welfare fraud, and we all know that was used to scapegoat the poor for our economic troubles, when a fuel shortage caused the 1970 recession. I suppose that recession is ancient and forgotten history to many people in the discussions.

You know the Phantom of the Opera? Well I would be the Phantom of the U of O library, if I could give up the comfort of my home. It would be cool to live in the basement and roam the library when no one was there.
But then, that could be a little unbalancing, now that I think about it. Where I am, I interact with family and neighbors a lot, and this probably plays an important role in keeping me balanced. :uhoh: CS

venomgirl, what a beautiful gift you give others. Clearly you are giving of yourself, and who knows how far the ripples of your action will go?

Many years ago, I was seriously suicidal and had stopped in a restaruant to have a cup of coffee and try to figure how I would end my life. The waitress served me with a smile. Hey, when a person feels as bad as I did, like an infected boil on the face of the earth, the smallest act of kindness can have a big impact. I walked away determined to live, and that meant determined to make my life better. I never forgot, even when we have nothing to give, we can give a smile that may change a person's life. We may never know the effect of our smiles, but their effect sure is better than put downs and arguing with people to win an arguement rather than explore a truth. I went home to my children, years later, I know that was a good choice. My life has been filled with meaning. I will always appreciate that waitresses smile.

cs thinks trying "preach" and "teach them my ways" is wonderful?

Whoo I really blew it last night. I woke this morning realizing there is a question about the value of teaching right and wrong, not just hurt feelings because someone is being insensitive. This discussion really needs to move to philosophy, however, those who would might benefit most from it, seem  least capable of thinking things through and articulating concepts.

thinking giving a gift
is prostituting being
selling love
for warming fearing

loving is

Right and wrong can not be know? Hum, that is a subject for philosophy and I would argue right and wrong can be known. It is a matter of con-sciousness and con-science and the ability to reason. This is what separates us from the animals, but not to the degree that some think we are separated from animals.

To be honest, to me the difference in right and wrong is that of the individual's opinion. for instance, most people think liking Star Wars is gay, or is at least just something to where you go and see it at the movies, and nothing more, no books or discussions involving it. but, i love it dearly, and i don't care if it's wrong, right, or indifferent.

I am not a christian. Neither is pnklphnts. Yet we are both youth leaders at a local church. Obviously I feel like a complete hypocrite much of the time. But actually, I agree with many of Jesus' teachings and alot of the things that my church is doing. Though I do disagree with a few of the fundamental tenets, i am all for the main message of love. I believe that a good christian, that is one who lives by the teachings of Jesus, is a good person.

help...

i don't know if it is only me, but has any one of you ever had a hard time translating your ideals into actions? sometimes it is so wonderful to just explore the mind, finding out how far, or deep, you can go? and then you realize that you have retreated into your own world? I understand it is important to look inward first before one can really share one's self to the world, but i think i got so wraped up with the looking inward part. and now, i'm finding it a bit difficult to express my thoughts and my ideas. I enjoy the mental acrobatics as I read books and argue/discuss with plato or ram dass, but I'm apprehensive when it comes to discussing with our governor or my supervisor. sheesh..

forgive me. i'm new in the bigview neighb0orhood. :uhoh:

william

thanks dude.

maybe learning to translate ideas into words or actions are things we must learn on our own. maybe it is journey we have to embark on by ourselves.

... as in most things in life- we must discover the ways by ourselves.

... only when we have become so intimately familiar with the darkness and the unknown can we be finally ready to face the light and the knowledge...

Lead by example. Like water on the rock, although the rock seems to withstand the force, water will set its path and make its way.
