Common Sense

From the Quran:
"And fight those who have not faith in Allah nor in the hereafter and who forbid not what God and his Prophet have forbidden, and who are not committed to the religion of truth" (9:29);
"O Prophet, fight the disbelievers and hypocrites" (9:73);
"Fight the people of the book [Christians and Jews], who do not accept the religion of the truth (Islam)" (9:29);
"Strike terror into the hearts of the enemies of Allah and your enemies" (8:60);
"I will instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers, smite them above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off them. It is not you who slew them; it was Allah" (8:12,17).
"The unbelievers follow falsehood while the believers follow the Truth. When you meet the unbeliever strike off his head, and when you have laid him low, bind him firmly" (sura 23).
"When you meet the unbelievers, strike off their heads; then when you have made wide slaughter among them, carefully tie up the remaining captives." (Sura xlvii.4)
"Those who believe fight in the cause of God."(Sura iv, 76)
"Fight then against them till strife be at an end, and the religion be all of Allah" (Sura viii, 39-42)
"Kill those who join other gods with Allah wherever you may find them."(Sura ix, 5-6)
The Qur'an instructs Muslims "not to make friendship with Jews and Christians" (5:51), "to kill the disbelievers wherever we find them" (2:191), "to murder them and treat them harshly" (9:123), "fight and slay the Pagans, seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem" (9:5), "to slay or crucify or cut the hands and feet of the unbelievers" (5:34), "to seize them, and bind them, and burn them in the blazing fire" (69:30-37).
This is a glimpse into Islam, the "peaceful religion." Is there no causal connection between terrorists and the Qur'an? Oh, I don't know, it just seems like there might be.
To listen to all you cultural relativists speak so emotionally about tolerance is sickening when you consider what it is you're tolerating. The only thing that can be said in your favor is that you, literally, have no idea what you're talking about.
That will soon end, and then you'll have to account for your tolerance in the face of the facts.
Erasmus would have said much worse of Islam, and there in lies your duplicitous, Thomas.
Cheers

If your own full brother, or your son or daughter, or your beloved wife, or you intimate friend, entices you secretly to serve other gods, whom you and your fathers have not known, gods of any other nations, near at hand or far away, from one end of the earth to the other: do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kill him. Your hand shall be the first raised to slay him; the rest of the people shall join in with you. You shall stone him to death, because he sought to lead you astray from the Lord, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. And all Israel, hearing of this, shall fear and never do such evil as this in your midst. (Deuteronomy 13:7-12 NAB)
Suppose a man or woman among you, in one of your towns that the LORD your God is giving you, has done evil in the sight of the LORD your God and has violated the covenant by serving other gods or by worshiping the sun, the moon, or any of the forces of heaven, which I have strictly forbidden. When you hear about it, investigate the matter thoroughly. If it is true that this detestable thing has been done in Israel, then that man or woman must be taken to the gates of the town and stoned to death. (Deuteronomy 17:2-5 NLT)
One day a man who had an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father got into a fight with one of the Israelite men. During the fight, this son of an Israelite woman blasphemed the LORD's name. So the man was brought to Moses for judgment. His mother's name was Shelomith. She was the daughter of Dibri of the tribe of Dan. They put the man in custody until the LORD's will in the matter should become clear. Then the LORD said to Moses, "Take the blasphemer outside the camp, and tell all those who heard him to lay their hands on his head. Then let the entire community stone him to death. Say to the people of Israel: Those who blaspheme God will suffer the consequences of their guilt and be punished. Anyone who blasphemes the LORD's name must be stoned to death by the whole community of Israel. Any Israelite or foreigner among you who blasphemes the LORD's name will surely die. (Leviticus 24:10-16 NLT)
Suppose there are prophets among you, or those who have dreams about the future, and they promise you signs or miracles, and the predicted signs or miracles take place. If the prophets then say, 'Come, let us worship the gods of foreign nations,' do not listen to them. The LORD your God is testing you to see if you love him with all your heart and soul. Serve only the LORD your God and fear him alone. Obey his commands, listen to his voice, and cling to him. The false prophets or dreamers who try to lead you astray must be put to death, for they encourage rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you out of slavery in the land of Egypt. Since they try to keep you from following the LORD your God, you must execute them to remove the evil from among you. (Deuteronomy 13:1-5 NLT)
But any prophet who claims to give a message from another god or who falsely claims to speak for me must die.' You may wonder, 'How will we know whether the prophecy is from the LORD or not?' If the prophet predicts something in the LORD's name and it does not happen, the LORD did not give the message. That prophet has spoken on his own and need not be feared. (Deuteronomy 18:20-22 NLT)
Explaining your quotes in the Qu'ran and explaining the peaceful nature of the Qu'ran: http://www.soundvision.com/info/peace/quran.asp
Both Christian and Jewish scriptures accepted as the word of God:
p. 129 We [the Gods] gave the Scriptures to the Israelites and bestowed on them wisdom and prophethood.
On the Day of Resurrection your Lord Himself will judge their differences.
p. 152 Therefore call men to the true faith...say: ŒI believe in all the scriptures that Allah has revealed. I am commanded to exercise justice....¹
Mohammed preaches the Golden Rule of Jesus:
p. 158 Requite evil with good and he who is your enemy will become your dearest friend. But none will attain this save those who endure with fortitude and are greatly favoured by Allah.
Muslims and Christians and Jews are to be treated courteously:
p. 196 Be courteous when you argue with the People of the Book [Bible], except with those among them who do evil. Say: ŒWe believe in that which is revealed to us and which was revealed to you. Our God and your God is one
. . .² [Note of logic: Therefore, faithful Muslims and Christians consider themselves brothers, i.e., family.]
p. 220 Requite evil with good.
All nations have God¹s apostles:
p. 234 The day will surely come when We shall summon every nation with its apostle. Those who are given their books in their right hands will read their recorded doings, and shall not in the least be wronged.
p. 243 Say: ŒMy Lord has forbidden all indecent acts, whether overt or disguised, sin, and wrongful oppression. . . .
Children of Adam, when apostles of your own come to proclaim to you My revelations, those that take warning and mend their ways will have nothing to fear or to regret . . . .
Muslims believe that Allah will remove hatred from all good people:
p. 244 As for those that have faith and do good works . . . We shall take away all hatred from their hearts.
p. 248 ŒIf there are some among you who believe in my message and others who disbelieve it, be patient until Allah shall judge between us. He is the best of judges.¹
p. 252 [Note: all faithful Muslims will believe the Law of Moses as coming from Allah:] And when [Moses¹] Lord revealed Himself . . . Moses fell down senseless, and when he came to himself said: ŒGlory be to You! Accept my repentance. I am the first of believers.¹
He said: ŒI have chosen you of all mankind to make known My messages and My commandments. Take therefore what I have given you, and be thankful.¹
Allah wants Muslims to be kind toward those who are kind to them:
p. 262 Allah does not forbid you to be kind and equitable to those who have neither made war on your religion nor driven you from your homes. Allah loves the equitable.
Allah is forgiving and merciful.
p. 305 To those who commit evil through ignorance and afterwards repent and mend their ways your Lord is forgiving and merciful.
Retribution must equal the offense and no more:
p. 306 If you punish, let your punishment be proportionate to the wrong that has been done you. But it shall be best for you to endure your wrongs with patience.
p. 309 Tell the unbelievers that if they mend their ways their past shall be forgiven. . . .
p. 313 If an idolater seeks asylum with you, give him protection so that he may hear the Word of Allah, and then convey him to safety. . . .
So long as they keep faith with you, keep faith with them. Allah loves the righteous.
Those who live their religion (the innocent) will have nothing to fear from those who believe Mohammed:
p. 330 Believers, Jews, Christians, and Sabaeans‹whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day and does what is right‹shall be rewarded by their Lord; they have nothing to fear or to regret.
p. 333 Can you believe in one part of the Scriptures and deny another?
Koran/Bible sent from God to settle all disputes and unite mankind:
p. 345 Mankind were once one nation. Then Allah sent forth prophets to give them good news and to warn them, and with these He sent down the Book with the truth, that it might judge the disputes of men.
Showing mercy when offenses come atones for one¹s own sins:
p. 382 In the Torah We decreed for them a life for a life, an eye for an eye . . . But if a man charitably forbears from retaliation, his remission shall atone for him. Transgressors are those that do not judge in accordance with Allah¹s revelations.
p. 398 To those who have received the Scriptures and to the Gentiles say: ŒWill you surrender yourselves to Allah?¹ If they become Muslims they shall be rightly guided; if they give no heed, then your only duty is to warn them.
Law of Moses holds for the Muslims too; Koran given to show the people mercy:
p. 428 To Moses We gave the Scriptures, a perfect code for the righteous, with precepts about all things, and a guide and a blessing, so that his people might believe in the ultimate meeting with their Lord. And now We have revealed this Book with Our blessings. Observe it and keep from evil, so that you may find mercy and not say: ŒThe Scriptures were revealed only to two sects before us [Jews and Christians]; we have no knowledge of what they read¹; or ŒHad the Scriptures been revealed to us we would have been better guided than they.¹
"Acquire knowledge, it enables its professor to distinguish right from wrong; it lights the way to heaven. It is our friend in the
desert, our company in solitude and companion when friendless. It guides us to happiness, it sustains us in misery, it is an ornament amongst friends and an armor against enemies." (widely attributed to the Prophet Mohammed)
"The most excellent Jihad is that for the conquest of self." (Mohammed)
Why dont u try reading the book before condeming 1.7 billion believers?

It's hard to believe some of those quotes come from a religious text.

Excellent, pnklphnts. I am so glad you added bible quotes and other parts of the Karan. I was not looking forward to doing the job myself. I don't think I could have done as well.
If I were granted three wishes, it would be difficult deciding what they would be, but for sure, I think it would be divine, if everyone studied all the relgions, and communicated with people from all points of view.
So much of what has been said in holy books, is a matter of culture and time. If only people would be more wholistic in their understanding of such matters.
Jesus is suppose to have said "know thy enemy". What might be done to encourage this? I am sure that was said knowing that when try to know each other, we begin bridging our differences.
