What do Judeao-Christians think of women?

Are women to be considered full humans? Up until the 1800’s, in the Christian church, women were considered to be without souls and had no rights of inheritance. They were given no respect as is proven in 1 Corinthians 14: 34-35, “….for it is a shame for women to speak in church…”

"every woman should be filled with shame by the thought that she is a woman". Clement of Alexandria

“Blessed be God, King of the Universe that Thou has not made me a woman.” an Orthodox Jewish Prayer for Jewish males

"I know this is painful for the ladies to hear, but if you get married, you have accepted the headship of a man, your husband. Christ is the head of the household and the husband is the head of the wife, and that's the way it is, period." Pat Robertson

"girls begin to talk and to stand on their feet sooner than boys because weeds always grow up more quickly than good crops". Martin Luther

"If the church should have defined anything to be black which to our eyes appear white, we ought in like manner pronounce it black." St Ignatius Loyola 1491-1556

"If the bible had said that Jonah swallowed the whale, I would believe it". -- William Jennings Bryan

"If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her...He must marry the girl, for he has violated her.." Deut. 22:28-29

"The plunder remaining from the spoils that the soldiers took was... 32,000 women who had never slept with a man....God wanting 32 virgins to be set aside for himself" Num. 31:31-40

God made woman as a "helper suitable for man."

Ephesians 5:22, wives are instructed to submit to their husbands.

1Cor11:9, women were made for man.

Timothy 2:11-15, "Let a woman learn in silence with all submissiveness. I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men; she is to keep silent.

Peter 3:1-6 exhorts wives to "be submissive to your husbands"

Col 3:18 and Titus 2:11-12, let women learn in silence and be completely submissive; for no woman shall be permitted to teach or have authority over men.

What do Real Americans think of women?

"I am the poet of the woman the same as the man,...And I say it is as great to be a woman as to be a man." Walt Whitman

Vicente, those dudes are jerks. Robertson in particular is a jackass. Somebody needs to tell him we're living in the 21st century.

recently I have been learning about the Sacred Marriage (click here) (http://www.llewellynjournal.com/article/659) totally awesome, sort of like a Christian yin-yang

why is it that christianity makes us ashamed of our natural urges and forces us to not give in? why would anyone believe that a "God" made us this way and feel these things and we're then supposed to push them aside ? (ex: sex)

How come God gets to take credit for all the good things that humanity does, when its our fault when we screw up?
That isn't a fair God.

Because people are ignorant and very seldom take the time and energy to question the things they do on a regular basis and the things they believe in.

What do the rest of you think about the possibility that a culture's ideas about violence and war lead to its treatment of women? I was thinking that prior to the invention of gunpowder, men held a real advantage on the battlefield, which lead to a higher social position. The dogmas of all major religions are from a different, more violent time. (Of course, with our society's growing bloodlust, I could be wrong.)

The forced submission of females is a product not of Christianity, but of the patriarchy, which is much older than Christianity. The judeo-christian moral norms have evolved in existing patriarchic cultures, therefore they are patriarchic themselves. Although the patriarchy was initially designed for the protection of women, the system became degraded and perverted. The worldwide reversal of patriarchic culture has only begun and it's open-ended. What we are witnessing now, the women's liberation movement that started with Wollstonecraft and others, is a large scale cathartic event. It has mixed results so far, both positive (political equality) and negative (gender war). I think that true independence is only realized once the society has completed the transition from hierarchical control structures to networked control structures.

The trouble for us is that the Bible was written for Christian understanding which is based upon the psychological appreciation of the objective human condition. However all we know is Christendom and the internal and external influences that appeal to our imagined self importance and vanity which only reflects the human condition in our imagination.

The complimentary relationship between male and female is an extraordinary thing when it is understood for what it is without being perverted by all sorts of PC thought

I'm going to agree with Thomas on this one.

I honestly think that anyone who views either gender as superior has to have some ignorant, petty reason. Like, if a man is sexist, its probably because he never got laid in high school, or the head cheerleader picked on him a lot.

The role of women has definitely improved significantly over time. Although many women are not exactly contributing to the advancement of the female race.

The superior role of men used to (hundreds of years ago) be very practical.
My friend Molly created a hierarchy of humans based on the strong and the weak, the intelligent and the stupid. With weak stupid people at the bottom and strong, intelligent men at the top.

I think popular culture has a lot to do with the treatement of women. Look on MTV, 50 Cent's on there talking about slapping bitches, etc. That needs to change. Why would a female want to hear a song where it says "I've never met a bitch that didn't need to be slapped" (-Snoop Dogg)? Until enough people get the public opinion of what is right and wrong to change, women will continue to have a subordinate role in society.

i pay my own bills, i do what i want, i get what i want.......

i don't think of myself as inferior to males
and i'm not anti-male or any type of super feminist.

i love men.
i love their bodies.
especially their arms.

we are all equal, we're meant to work together, be partners.
men and women benefit from each other.
