View Full Version : Why V/s How

From the big bang to evolution to the latest technological advancement, all we have thought about is “how” and we found our answers sooner or later. The only thing that is left unanswered is “why”.
Why evolution? Why was it needed?
Why do we exist, grow and progress?
Change is permanent .Why?
The only answer I get all the time is – this is how it was supposed to be (how again). This is certainly not answer I am looking for.
Is the why not important enough or out of our reach. Often another argument to answer the quest of why is – it was a need – and I ask why –we go back to history and end on big bang and the last question is “ Why the Big bang”.
Somehow I feel that answer for every how is different and so many that we can easily find them but the answers of all why’s would be same ( if we ever find one) for everything (a universal rule -may be that is what I am searching for) , but since it so rare I am having a hard time to find it.
Can anybody enlighten me?

Dear rbx5,
Maybe the only reason that any of us are here, is, we have the opportunity to realize that, we are here. :tao:

Well, science can answer the how. Thats what science does. Im sure can think of a few instences where Science answers Why's. But those are always things like "Why does this blow up when I touch it?", which could also be defined as a How. In order to answer the Why's, religion was created. Thats what it is, religion gives people meaning. I am not very religious; I do think it is possible for there to be a creator(s), but Im not sure anyone has got it yet.
You can also get the Why's through introspection, because it will certainly change for each person. And I think that very soon, this will be the only way to answer your Why's. Because very soon it seems, Science will be able to dissprove all the Hows that the various religions have come up with to support their theories. And a theory without any proof is just an opinion. And the people's faith will only last so long once their delicate illusion is broken.
But if you want what I have found to be the grim and honest truth? If you are speaking in scientific terms, it's reproducing. Our only purpose is to continue our existance for as long as we can. It is the instinc we are born with, to survive, and as we develope, to "mate". When you look at the simplest forms of life, the ones stripped of all but the bare minimum, the most absolute instincts, it is to mate. Many bugs, after becomeing fully mature have only 24 hours to...mate. It comes back again and again, in all forms of life, everything revolves around it.
But what seperates us from every other species, is the ability to love. To control our lust, and live for other reasons. The will to deny our self-preservation instincts when someone we love is in trouble.
Max, you are all my reasons; Max, you are all my Why's.
Love, my friends. Love is your answer.

I often think about creation and the universe whilst i am painting.
Why did the "Creator" create?
I don't find my answers by asking others, i find their answers.
Why did I create this painting? The answer to this question is the same as the first, and every question with a why, can be boiled down to the same Why?
My answer varies depending on circumstances, but is usally a Why Not? but that hasn't really answered anything, just asked more questions. (is that such a bad thing? nah.)
Because I can. Same as Why did I climb this Mountain? Because I could.
So why did the Creator create? Well, what would you do in his/her/it's shoes?
I feel therefor i am. I AM therefore I am.
Am I?
I am.
Why am I
Because I am I. --------> (or, Because I am.)??
Are You?
You are.
Why are You?
Because You are You. (or Because You are.)??
Whenever i hear a parent dismiss a curious child who is always asking why? with the dumb answer: Because i said so. i want to call social services and report abuse.
Do i have a point? Is there any truth to what i say? any revelation? probably not. perhaps. i dunno. My conclusion to the Question of Why? It's a self answering question.
to The ferret:
How does Love seperate us from all the other species? My kittens 'drip' with love. Dolphins love. Bears love. Wolves love. All creatures love. Even insects probably love, just Differently, perhaps so much that we fail to recognize it, because we compare it to our own form/experiences of love, and judge based on similarity. but a thing is known by differences as well. I see ants scurrying about bringing food back to the colony... is this not love? love for the collective self? Love=Life if it's alive it loves. Does the mother bear not put self preservation aside, when she places herself between Danger and her Cubs? That's a shining example of Love if you ask me. Lust is love too. Just short term, usually physical based love. But love nonetheless. I have experienced Mental Lust, and Spiritual Lust for people too. it's still love though.

The Why takes us to I Am...Why bangs 'against' I Am wall...bang! bang! bang!
If we don't bang, we don't know that we can't know. Knowing that we can't know brings peace and reveals love. And makes one  a whole lot...
As far as this Why has banged, anyway...

to jesupocaplypse:
the examples you give though, the mother and her cubs, the ants and their colony. protecting those ultimately benifit themselves, or their species. the mother bear is trying to protect her offspring, to keep their bloodline, to keep the species alive. there is still a difference in the love.
another thing that seperates us is that we are aware of our own existence. we have a name for our species, we are capable of thinking in the third person. we can look at the world beyond ours. i live on an island, but i still can comprehend that there is more to it then that. i know that there is a whole other world.
try explaining that to your bear friend. :boxing:

Ah ferret, yes the mother bear protects her own, for the continuation of their species... is a bear aware of the possibility of exinction? no, and that is another thing that seperates us from other animals, BUT, that doesn't change the fact that it's still love. and no different from our love, just less complex. this chemical sensation we experience that we call love, is it not a built in instinct to help the continuation of our species?
There are many many things that make us different from the other animals, but the ability to love is NOT one of them. All beings experience Love, and all beings experience Fear.
Just because the love animals experience is different (more or less) than the way Humans expereince it, doesn't make it non existant. I'm sure no two species of animals experience love in the same way either.
We have a name for our species. A symbol that can be used to represent our memories and ideas of what we are. Animals don't think the same way as we do and don't express them selves the same way. But does this mean that they arn't aware of themselves or who and what they are in their own way? Just because a cat doesn't think with human words to describe it's emotions, doesn't mean it doesn;t have those emotions.
There is a difference in the love one man and another experience, but while they may be different, they still Are.
Likewise, there is a difference between the love one species and another experiece, but while they may be different....
I think you should spend more time studying and observing animal behavior, and you might begin to understand how very Similar they are to us, and how very similar we are to them.
HOW do you Know, that an animal doesn't have it's own "name" for itself?? How is it that you were able to discover this?
How do you know that an animal cannot think in the third person?
How do you know that an animal cannot think or imagine a world beyond this? or think or imagine anything?
How is it that anyone can 'know' that an animal is not aware of itself?
I have met many humans who appear much less sentient than most cats i know.
When a cat goes out on the prowl, and starts mewling and howling for a mate, could it not be translated as " I AM horny, and looking for a lovely young pussy with whom i can share my seed with..." Hardly much different than humans. Just more direct. No bullshit.
Give me an example of anything in Human behavior that doesn't ultimately benefit themselves?
no different than animals.
Friend, what's with the :boxing: ?? Think you this a fight? i'm done this Conversation with you if you do.
