Here's a quick question...

Is lying adaptive? Is truth overrated? If so, how?

Is lying adaptive?
I would say that it usually is.
People usually lie because they fear rejection/want acceptance. We adapt ourselves to our environment by making ourselves appear to be more attractive so that we will be more likely to be accepted. The more we're accepted the more likely we are to survive if we run out of personal resources.

Is truth overrated? If so, how?
It depends on the situation.
I think that telling the truth in "all situations no matter what" is overrated, unreasonable, and occasionally dangerous. For my own personal philosophy though, in normal circumstances, I think that truth is just plain easier. It's easier to remember the truth then lies.

It seems more that 'lying' is a maladaptive strategy in both social and biological contexts. Asuming that our species is mildly intelligent, liars tend to be debunked. Lying doesn't pay as an overall strategy, because penalization usually exceeds the accumulated benefit. There are of course some situations in which lying is the only sensible course of action, such as a wife asking: "Honey, do you think I've gained weight?" - let's call it the "honest husband's dilemma".

In the animal kingdom, lying and cheating can be observed occasionally. Cuckoos come to mind, or animals that wear "don't-eat-me" warning colors. The British biologist Richard Dawkins made some interesting observations on lying and cheating strategies in the courtship behavior of some species. His treatise involves peacocks, monkey, and penis bones.

Cheers, Thomas

 You asked some interesting questions, I'll give you my opinion........ I belive that some people lie out of habit in order to take "the easy way out" of a situation. I do NOT beleive that truth is overated!!!!! It may be difficult to tell the truth ALL of the time, but the key is not to put yourself in a situation where you will NEED to lie in order not to hurt someone. :)

LIARS & CLOX

Some people died & went to heaven. St Peter met them at the gate, sent them down to processing, & when that was completed, took them on a short tour.

They walked into a huge room full of clocks. St Peter explained that there was a clock in the room for everybody who has & ever will live, & whenever somebody tells a lie, the hands on their personal clock moves a second. He showed each newcomer their clock, then pointed out the clocks of some famous people.

"This is Mother Teresa's clock," He said, pointing to a clock with both hands on the 12 "As you can see, the hands haven't moved becuz she never told a lie."

St Peter ushered the newcomers into a long hall. "This is the Hall of Presidents," he said. "All the Presidents' clocks hang on this wall. Here is President Lincoln's clock," he gestured towards a clock that read 2 seconds past 12. "Honest Abe only told 2 lies his entire life."

The newcomers walked along the hall looking at the Presidential clocks. But one was missing.

"Where's dubya's clock?" somebody asked.

"What? Oh," St Peter looked at the empty spot on the wall, then turned back to the newcomers, explaining, "Jesus had it taken down & installed in his office. He's using it as a ceiling fan."

I agree, we shouldn't of bombed Kosovo or the aspirin factory. Or the Chinese embassy. Do you agree that we shouldn't be bombing Iraq or Afghanistan?

ps, I don't care all that much for Kerry either. Just what we need, another skull'n'bonesman.

Truth can get you out of very difficult positions in long terms.Even
if a truth leads you to problems, I believe this is temporary.

Truth is a valuable thing. We must offer our precious stuff
to people who are worth it.

so even if truth is the only way in my opinion, there's
always the silence if you believe someone is
not worth of your truth!

And speaking of liars, I've given up on girls.

My last gf turned out be nothing more than a manipulative, conceited, and resentful white trash slut... the kind that's always insecure and paranoid and out to get you, 'cuz everybody else had what she "knew" should have rightfully been hers.

She had a complex about the fact that she liked cheap living... Felt like she had to prove she didn't or something; sucked ten years out of my life in the process, and those were the years that could truly have been good for me, if she hadn't tricked me out of them with guilt and shit.

That, and her snarling drunk of a father... It just doesn't pay to get too attached to ****ed-up people. Help them if you want to, but don't get involved with them.

I can't even say that she got hers in the end... She went on to live the life of Riley, and I hear even got married. Probably quite happy now, and makin' lots of money, too.

That's why I don't get involved with them anymore... because they can do whatever they like to you, and get away scot-free: society puts the little "darlings" on a pedestal, no matter what they do. And if you get involved with them, they can ruin your life even worse, and frequently will, just as an exercise of strength, which flatters them. And this is not exaggeration; every guy who has the balls to really be honest, will admit this is the way it is now.

So I think that in general, chicks today are not even good enough to wipe your ass with.

..does it depend on where you're living? The women i know are wonderful beings, but thenagain, i'm not romantically involved with them...
